Amarillo Independent School District
DISTRICT POLICY FOR CHARGING SCHOOL MEALS
AISD's policy is that no child goes hungry. This policy is adopted by all schools in the District and is to be proactive in parent notification and is to be age appropriate. Parents and or guardians are responsible to maintain their child's account throughout the entire school year. The charges are for reimbursable meals only. Absolutely no ala carte items are to be charged. The policy is as follows:
- Elementary School: 4 charges
- Middle School: 2 charges
- High School: 1 charge
- Faculty members: 1 charge
A "no charge" policy takes affect for the remainder of the school year starting the second Monday in May.
Elementary Schools (K-5)
When the student's account goes under $5.00 the child will be verbally reminded they need money in their account. Also a weekly balance statement will be sent home in child's folder indicating how much is in child's account.
After the first charge a "voluntary" hand stamp/sticker, "Smile face with a $ sign nose" will be stamped on student's hand or a reminder coupon "Need Lunch Money" will be given to student.
After second charge a note will be sent to parent or guardian stating the amount of money owed.
After third charge a phone call will be made to parent or guardian.
After fourth charge the student will receive a free and reduced Meal Application (anyone needing financial assistance, even for a temporary period, may fill out an application for free and reduced meals) and a written note of charges due to the food service.
After four charges the student will receive a complimentary choice of peanut butter and jelly or cheese sandwich and milk. Every attempt will be made by food service staff not to embarrass the student.
Parents will have five (5) days to satisfy the balance, return a completed meal application or make other arrangements with the campus Principal. Upon investigation and documentation the Principal may sign a Meal Application to provide free meals to a needy student whose parents are unresponsive.
Middle School (6-8)
When the student's account goes under $5.00 the child will be verbally reminded he/she needs money added to their account.
After first charge a slip will be given to student to remind them they need lunch money.
After second charge a phone call will be placed to parent to notify the charges are due and the parent will be offered a free and reduced meal application if required.
After the second charge the student will receive a complimentary choice of peanut butter and jelly or cheese sandwich and milk.
Principal will be notified if more than 2 complimentary meals are taken and there are no attempts from parents to satisfy the balance.
High School (9-12)
When the student's account goes under $5.00 the student will be verbally reminded they need money in their account or they will need cash to purchase a meal.
The student will be only allowed one (1) charge with a reminder letter that they are responsible for repayment.
After one charge the student may receive a choice of a complimentary peanut butter and jelly or cheese sandwich and milk.
The Principal will be notified if the student does not satisfy the money owed and does not have a lunch from home.
Unpaid charges will be carried over year to year from school to school within the District.
